Ayurveda Food – a Healing System for the Body and Soul

We live in a fast, corporate world in which chasing money has become the main preoccupation. There’s a lot of stress, busy schedules, and junk food in our everyday lives, so many people have lost touch with their inner self. Unfortunately, all this eventually takes a toll on one’s health, so it’s important to get back on the right track before it’s too late. Ayurveda, a traditional Indian healing system, can help us restore balance and lead a healthy and fulfilled life. Ayurvedic principles aren’t complicated, and almost everybody could follow them, at least to a certain extent. Food occupies a very important role in this 5,000-year-old practice, and it’s believed to have the power to heal or harm.

Food for the Soul

Ayurveda categorizes everything in terms of energy. According to Ayurvedic teachings, all people are born with “Prakruti”, which refers to a state of complete balance. If it’s not properly maintained, it becomes imbalanced, meaning that “Vikruti” has taken over, which leads to disease. The aim of Ayurveda is to restore prakruti and well-being. Each person has a certain body type or dosha: Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, and they are an essential part of prakruti. When you identify your dosha, you can adjust your lifestyle and food accordingly, and start the healing process in your body. Ayurvedic diet depends on your dosha, which means that it’s personalized, but there are some basic principles. One of them is that digestion is crucial for maintaining good health.

One with Nature

Genetically modified food, processed food, or chemical-laden food disturbs prakruti. Another important Ayurvedic principle says that the human body operates in accordance with the laws of the universe, so eating food that isn’t completely natural causes imbalance and disease. If you have medical issues with the digestive system you can also consult other proven and target specific diets like celiac disease diet. It’s believed that toxins and pesticides are responsible for a global cancer epidemic. That’s why eating only organic and pesticide-free foods is a must. All three doshas can highly benefit from all kinds of fruits and vegetables, as they help the body to detoxify and cleanse. Determine your dosha, and find out what you should base your diet on. According to Ayurveda, it’s better to cook your vegetables than to eat them raw, although this may seem a bit illogical if we take into consideration that raw vegetables are packed with nutrients. The key lies in digestion and metabolism, as it’s easier for the body to metabolize cooked veggies.

Spice It Up

When it comes to spices, they’re more than just condiments used for flavor and to make food more delicious. They can also speed up your digestion, detox your body, or boost your immunity and metabolism. Ayurvedic principles say that every meal should include 6 different tastes: salty, sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, and astringent and that each of them plays an important role in our health. Of course, each dosha has a different preference, so Kapha benefits from pungent, bitter, and astringent, Pitta enjoys sweet, bitter, and astringent, while Vata prefers sweet, sour, and salty. Keep your beverages simple and natural, and stay away from coffee, soft drinks, and alcohol. Drinking a lot of water will keep you hydrated and it will flush toxins out of your system. However, although many people like ice-cold water, it should be avoided as it slows down the circulation and digestion.

Influence on Your Whole Spirit

In order to experience the full benefit of Ayurvedic healing, certain lifestyle changes are necessary. Again, everything has to be in accordance with the laws of the universe. The body’s biological clock is in tune with nature, so it’s heavily affected by light or darkness which means that it’s best to go to bed around 10pm and wake up early in the morning. Physical exercise is highly recommended, as well as yoga. Meditation is another essential principle, as it’s the best way to deal with stress. It’s not just about one or the other thing. The main goal of Ayurvedic diet is to achieve a feeling of one with self, one with nature and most of all – give you confidence. Confidence can be drawn from the feelling of the strong body. The one you can rely on. If you feel you can rely on your body to function well, you can focus on your spiritual journey. The Ayurvedic diet can bring vitality into your life and leave your medical issues behind simply by sticking to its principles.
