Ever walk into a room and realize the people in front of you just ain’t your peeps?! No harm. No foul. No connection. Earlier this week I was definitely the odd woman out. From dress to background to turf to network to “vibe” it was clear that this was not my tribe. On the way out the door I even murmured to one attendee, “I’m having a rough day.” Her response? “Well, you’re a little out of your element.” Twenty years ago this would have stung. Today? It made me laugh. She’s 100% correct. I was out of my element. My element, my sandbox, is filled with people who are supportive, a lot less judgmental, filled with kindness not comparison, and don’t give a flying fig that I prefer tennis shoes over stilettos. All of us can play in some pretty big sandboxes. Not just everyone’s sandbox. Consider it a compliment when someone disses you. They remind you who you are, what you stand for, and which sandbox you want to play in.
